Compás de espera · Variaciones de una fuga

A book that breathes inward: desire, fragility and the necessary pause in which to listen to what has yet to be named.

Compás de espera is Eva Alarte Garví’s second published poetry collection.
If Ritmo de lucha followed the collective and inner pulse through three movements, this book turns its gaze towards an interior landscape: the force and bewilderment of love, patience, loss and the small, meaningful gestures that sustain a life.

Its poems begin in personal experience and open into a universal conversation with love—its different stages and dilemmas, beyond the forms it takes. The book comprises a dedication and three movements of love.
Dedication to the poetic, reflective process itself, which accompanies and shelters the author at every step of the journey
Compás de espera
the encounter, a life-charged collision of irrepressible forces
Despeinarás mi adiós
detachment and separation as a conscious process of rebellion
Esperanzas (a secas) freedom and the choice of an ideal of conscious love

The title holds within it that fertile interval of introspection behind every action. A cycle of life that accompanies us from the wound to reunion and release: the measure from which we can leave the past behind and begin again.

In conversation

Listen to a musical offshoot of the work in the Listening Room. To explore the complete poetic diptych, return to Ritmo de lucha; new writing and creative processes continue in Letters from the Future.

Poet Eva Alarte Garví is a philologist, translator, theatre-maker and musician whose creative journey moves back and forth between countries including Spain, Italy, the United States and Greece. She has taught at several European universities and is currently a permanent member of the teaching staff at the Instituto Cervantes. With extensive training across a range of artistic disciplines, she takes part in musical and stage projects across these cultures. Compás de espera is her second published poetry collection: both the opposite and the complement of her previous work, Ritmo de lucha, like the hidden face of the same moon.

The reissued poetry collection Compás de espera ·Variaciones de una fuga, by Eva Alarte Garví, offers an intimate yet universal vision of passion. Its verses capture the essence of love’s overwhelming spiral, the fleeting nature of its elements and the ceaseless metamorphosis of the emotional nuances that unravel it. Sensual closeness as a struggle between bodies and minds; desire, frustration, sex, tenderness, irony, contradiction, the acceptance of one’s own limits, solitude, union and hope… these are some of the conflicts traced by these stanzas. Their deeply human gaze draws the reader in, with a daring honesty that lends them poetic rawness and untamed beauty.
Now its poems are becoming songs. You can listen to them and share the emotions they awaken in you here
